Meet Brian Macdonald | CEO M’Porte - SHOUTOUT SOCAL

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Macdonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing that continues to surprise people is that the “compostable” takeout packaging, that is so prevalent today is never composted. In fact, only a couple cities in the United States have commercial composting facilities in place to handle that type of material. Not to mention many “certified compostable” dishware items are treated with perfluorinated compounds (PLA) which contaminate our waste, water, soil and bodies. The beauty of composting is so that it could be used as fertile soil, but farmers won’t purchase compost that has PLA in it because they know how bad it is for people and crops.

What should our readers know about your business?
M’Porte is proud to create the first and only Zero Waste Takeout program in San Diego, called the M’Porte Exchange Program. The M’Porte Exchange Program works by restaurant customers exchanging one reusable to-go container for another, creating a zero waste takeout experience. Once restaurant customers join the program, the container they purchased (either from M’Porte directly, or from a participating restaurant) is now theirs to own – that is until they exchange it for another one at any other participating restaurants. When customers drop off the containers at a participating restaurant, the restaurants clean the container like they would any plate used for indoor dining for the next M’Porte Exchange Program member to use. Effectively closing the zero-waste loop. You can think of it as a mix between a “BYO” and “reuse” system.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The perfect San Diego day – Torrey Pines Golf Course in the morning. If you live in San Diego, and don’t have a resident card – you are missing out. Then once you’ve got 18 in – head up to Del Mar Village to grab a bite at one of the M’Porte Exchange Program restaurants to get some zero waste takeout. Head up to Swami’s beach, have some food with an amazing view. Then grab your surfboard and play in the waves for a few hours.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout Jen Grove from the Del Mar Village Association for sharing our vision of making takeout a zero waste experience for everyone!
